I spent 3 months reviewing each book after I read it and 3 months not writing a single review. This experiment led me to conclude that writing book reviews are far more beneficial for readers than we realize.

In this article, I am going to share why this is so, how I came to this conclusion, and present a simple review template that can help even the busiest of us readers to write a basic book review in under 20-minutes for the books we read.
So you think your one-paragraph book review is not important? Think again.
Book reviews have the notorious reputation of being beneficial only to the people who refer to them to assess whether they should pick a book or not. But the period I spent actively avoiding writing book reviews shattered this misconception. I realized that my reading was more enriched for books I read and reviewed compared to those that I read but didnt review.
When I analyzed the gaps in my reading experience and researched a bit, I found writing book reviews benefits the reviewer in 3 major ways.
If I have to relieve the experience of reading a book, I reach out for the review I wrote for it. This is because my book reviews are personal, first-hand account of my experience of reading it. Most of what I felt when I read the book comes back to me through its reviews. Contrarily, I barely remember anything about the books I have read but havent reviewed. Granted I can always go back and flip through it if I ever want to retain what I read, but chances I have the book with me always is rare, considering especially how most of the books I read are borrowed or locked away in the attic of my moms house.
A research paper titled Why write book reviews? by Franklin Obeng-Odoom of the University of Technology, Sydney supports this idea. Book reviews help the reviewer recollect the ideas they get from the books, it says. Additionally, they help you sharpen your research and writing skills and develop evaluative skills.
Book reviews have helped me stay accountable for the time I spent when I was out of work during the lockdown. I spent almost three months not working and would have gone mad with anxiety had it not been for the books I read. Granted absence of reviews would not have negated the time I spent reading books, but writing reviews helped me find my grounds by reinforcing my reading efficiency. It helped me define what I did with all that không lấy phí time on my hands and made me strengthen my accountability for what I read.
You might insist reading books is something you do for pleasure and would rather let yourself enjoy without stressing yourself with the accountability of a review but it will only help you improve your reading experience. According to an article published in Forbes, accountability in anything you do improves execution, breeds excellence, helps you define clearer goals, and measure and improve your efficiency.
I found myself reading a lot differently when I planned on writing a review for the book I was reading. This was most apparent if the book I was reading was an ARC request or written by a friend who asked for my feedback. I was more attentive and aware of what I was reading.
A research guide published by USC Libraries helped me understand why. In its review process, it asked the reviewers to enlist a set of questions that should be answered along as they read the book. This helped me realize that when I read a book, I too was subconsciously marking the points I would mention in my review, thereby taking special notice of the important points in the book and anything else that especially drew my attention.
When you read with the intent of reviewing a book, it heightens your capability of absorbing what you read. This also helps you notice certain parts you would have otherwise skipped in the book, thus amping up your reading experience.
If you dont write book reviews, the loss, if any, is yours. It does nothing to the reader who can still rely on the book blurb to make his decision even if zero reviews exist for the book. Contrarily, if you write book reviews, you end up benefiting not only a fellow reader but yourself too in the numerous ways weve seen above.
But I dont have a background in either writing or the books subject matter. Am I qualified to review a book?, you might ask. The answer is that it doesnt matter. You just need to be a reader to write a book review. As a blog by The Writing Center, the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill states, through your reviews, the author wants to know what you think of their work, irrespective of who you are. They seek your unique opinion. You might not be an expert in the field, but your careful observations can help you make a reasonable assessment of the book. Such an assessment can help an author immensely, especially new authors. A study published in SAGE Journals concludes that book customers rely on book reviews for their purchase decision and book reviews can make or break the sales trò chơi for a book. As Dudley Court Press says,
The presence of book reviews can help validate the worthiness of a book and establish who the books audience is. Then once validated, other similar people are much more likely to want to join their peers and buy that same book.
You never know when your book review plays an important role in validating the next bestselling author!
I understand a lot of us might not find the time to write elaborate book reviews. Ill be sharing a book review template that will help you review the books you read in under 20 minutes. This is loosely based on the recommendations of The Writing Center, the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill which states that a good book review combines balanced opinion and concrete example, a critical assessment based on an explicitly stated rationale, and a recommendation to a potential audience.
You can spare 20 minutes out of your busy schedule over the weekend to review least one book you read as per the template below.
Time taken 5minutes

Time taken 2 minutes
Time taken 3 minutes
I hope this template helps you review least one book a week. You can spare 20 minutes out of your busy schedule over the weekend to write a book review. Publish it on Goodreads, Amazon, or any other place you deem fit. If youre not ready to share it with the world, you can write it in a word document and keep it under a Reviews thư mục on your device for now.
Book reviews are the easiest way for each one of us to engage with the reading community. This is how we do our bit as a part of the global literary community and keep the spirit of reading alive. Without book reviewers, the world of reading wouldnt be half as closely knit as it is now.
Let no one tell you your book reviews dont matter because, in the grand scheme of things, you now know they do.
